ANNA POLITKOWSKAJA LECTURES:
On October 7, 2006, the Russian journalist Anna Politkowskaja was murdered in her home in Moscow. She was the democratic voice of her country, standing for a critical mind against the regime, writing against the dirty war in Chechnya and defending freedom of the press and human rights. In December 2005 Anna Poltitkowskaja was our guest in Vienna together with the Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena and the Croatian writer Slavenka Drakulic to debate the dangerous role of reporters in war. In her memory the Bruno Kreisky Forum regularly invites Russian intellectuals to debate on democracy and human rights issues.
ZORAN DJINDJIC LECTURES:
“ON BEHALF OF DEMOCRACY - Perspectives of democratic developments in Serbia” is the title of a lecture series that brings together academics and professionals with the aim of continuing to promote the values which Zoran Djindjic strove towards. The Bruno Kreisky and t he Fond dr. Zoran Djindjic , represented by Ms. Ruzica Djindjic, regularly organize lectures and debates on future democratic perspectives.
" We, as a nation, lost the 20th century, we didn't win anything in the 20th century. We made huge mistakes and we must focus on the future. ” Zoran Djindjic
2008 - EUROPE'S HISTORICAL CONSCIOUSNESS:
Coming to Terms with Europe's Traumatic Pasts - an International Comparison
1918 - 1938 - 1948 - 1968 - 2008: Some past an present key dates.
The diverse functions of commemorating and the wide range of expectations towards memorial events will be debated and sounded out in a series of lectures and discussions with the focus on the Why?, the When?, the How?, and the consequences of commemorating.
All societies have to come to terms with traumatic pasts, since all attempts at repressing/ forgetting/ tabooing them are bound to fail. Past events inevitably influence (visions of) the present and the future: People may deliberately distance themselves from certain events or actors or identify with them. They may try to find culprits and/or to name victims after the event.
AGAINST THE GRAIN:
Risks and New Developments
Issues like the wide range of jobs and professional
occupations, the nature of work, working conditions,
social welfare, the training and education needed,
earnings and poverty in a globalised marketplace
constitute an important focal point of the Kreisky
Forum’s programme.

DIASPORA:
Exploring a Life Model
Contrary to the dictum that economic conditions will bring forth matching types of people, we are currently confronted with a pronounced mismatch. The dynamism of capitalist economics is generating an apparently boundless mobility. Whereas locations follow the pull of flexibilisation, the people attached to them remain tied to fixed, ‘grounded' identity concepts. The cultures of our nation states hold no mental resources for the life of modern nomads.
CIVIL SOCIETY AND DEMOCRATIC
DEVELOPMENTS:
Peoples on the Move
Development cooperation, processes of democratisation
and human rights are among the Kreisky Forum’s
other fields of concern. The Bruno Kreisky Prize
for Human Rights has been awarded on a biennial
basis since 1979, in cooperation with the Bruno
Kreisky Archives Foundation.
DIALOGUE BETWEEN SCIENCE AND
THE ARTS:
A Territory of Reflection
In cooperation with the members of the scientific
board the Forum invites academics and scientists
to debate intellectual challenges, exposure to
the new, and the growth of knowledge to explore
the world's major cultural, social and scientific
questions.
