How Brexit is Shrinking British Diplomatic Power
has been an op-ed columnist for The Irish Times on issues of political and social affairs since 1988. His writings on Brexit have won both the European Press Prize and the Orwell Prize for Journalism. He has written more than a dozen books; most recently he edited the book of the newspaper’s series Modern Ireland in 100 Objects. Awards include the AT Cross Award for Supreme Contribution to Irish Journalism. Throughout his career O’Toole has been a strong critic of political corruption. In 2011 he was named one of „Britain’s top 300 intellectuals“ by The Observer despite not being British or living in Britain. O’Toole teaches half of the year as Leonard L. Milberg visiting lecturer at Princeton University.
The reckless decision to leave the European Union, and the fantasies that fueled it, have destabilized the United Kingdom itself. Where is Britannia headed? Great Britain might break into Little England and its other parts before it might be able to establish Empire 2.0. A harsh task ahead for the United Kingdom: It needs to square the circle between new English nationalism and the dream of Global Britain.
Moderation: Tessa Szyszkowitz, journalist and author
Philoxenia is a new lecture series curated by the London based Austrian journalist and author Tessa Szyszkowitz. 2016 was the year when fear, xenophobia and right wing populism upstaged rationality. Donald Trump was elected to the White House and Britain voted in a referendum to leave the European Union. But counterforces are assembling to think about alternatives to fear and xenophobia as driving forces of political processes. Philoxenia wants to do just that: Welcome guests to exchange thoughts in order to find answers together to the challenges of the 21st century.
