CONTESTED SOLIDARITIES
Lines of division in contemporary society
Voters of right-wing populist parties want more solidarity for "our people", while Sebastian Kurz speaks of "new justice" that relieves the burden on "high achievers". Socialist concepts of justice are based on solidarity between "ordinary people" and "those at the top".
In fact, different "types of solidarity" can be identified in our society, which follow different norms of justice. Each of these types of solidarity has its own ideas of morality.
A team of social researchers has tracked down these competing norms of justice in numerous lengthy interviews with a wide range of citizens.
The results also show that they can also be reconciled - the diagnosis of polarisation that is so common today is therefore somewhat exaggerated. Carina Altreiter presents the study, which she conducted with her colleagues Jörg Flecker, Ulrike Papouschek, Saskja Schindler and Annika Schönauer.
