Ruth Wodak in conversation with Manfred Nowak
HUMAN RIGHTS POLICY WITH NEED FOR ACTION

Human rights concern us all. The coronavirus pandemic and the associated restrictions on fundamental rights have recently made this clear. But what is the actual state of human rights in Austria and how ambitious is Austria's human rights policy? Ruth Wodak discusses this with expert Manfred Nowak as part of the Science Talks. Areas that will also be discussed include asylum and migration issues, ways to make refugee policy more humane and the state of Austrian human rights protection. The lack of economic, social and cultural rights in the constitution, as well as an independent human rights institution, is a shortcoming that Manfred Nowak sees an acute need for action. He also calls for a comprehensive National Action Plan for Human Rights, a comprehensive anti-discrimination law and a "police force" to independently investigate and prosecute allegations of abuse. He also sees a need to catch up when it comes to the rights of children and people with disabilities.
