FRANZ VRANITZKY
POLITICS WITH ATTITUDE
Domestic and foreign policy tensions accompanied Franz Vranitzky's political career. As Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria (1986-1997), he fought for a respected Austria with diplomacy, substantive expertise and personal commitment. His years as Chancellor got off to a turbulent start: the takeover of the FPÖ by Jörg Haider, which led to new elections in 1986, the Waldheim affair with international repercussions and the EU accession negotiations. By admitting Austria's complicity in Nazi crimes, Vranitzky contributes to a new historical awareness. As a staunch anti-fascist, he still speaks out against anti-Semitism and racism today and warns against authoritarian systems and the dismantling of the rule of law and democracy in Europe.
Journalist and author Margaretha Kopeinig spoke to Franz Vranitzky about the major fundamental issues of his life and political career. Franz Vranitzky is convinced that politics must maintain its poise even in crisis situations - still highly topical today.
