One focus is to develop methods to prove causality in data when controlled experiments are too expensive or unethical. The group is also interested in various problems in biology that raise interesting geometric questions. Of particular interest here is the spatial organisation of chromosomes in the cell nucleus and how this organisation affects gene expression.

Caroline Uhler is an assistant professor at IST Austria. She grew up in Switzerland and studied mathematics and biology at the University of Zurich. With a Fulbright Scholarship, she was at the University of California at Berkeley from 2007 to 2011 and completed her doctorate in statistics. This was followed by short postdocs at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota and at ETH Zurich. She has been a group leader at IST Austria since the beginning of 2012 and was a research fellow at the new Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing in Berkeley last semester.

Moderation:
Arnold Schmidt studied physics at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1962.
