Borders were to be opened to people, goods, capital and ideas. The old maps were replaced by graphics illustrating the economic interdependence within the EU. Today, we are experiencing an ideological tidal shift: whereas the majority of Europeans were optimistic about globalisation just a few years ago, they now see migration and the return of geopolitics as a source of uncertainty. Ivan Krastev analyses the causes of this change and discusses the forms that European disintegration could take.
