Von Hippel joined RUSI after serving in the US Department of State as a Senior Adviser in the Bureau of Counterterrorism and as a Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilisation Operations, and finally, as Chief of Staff to General John Allen, Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter-ISIL.<\/p>\n<p>Moderation<strong> Tessa Szyszkowitz<\/strong>, journalist and author<\/p>\n<p>Karin von Hippel discusses the effect of military intervention in her academic and diplomatic work. Her book <em>Democracy by Force: US Military Intervention in the Post-Cold War World<\/em> (2000) dealt with the practical, but also moral implications of enforcing values on others under the assumption that this is in everybody's interest. Her work on counter-terrorism in the US State Department has brought the practical implications closer to her attention. Since the intervention in Iraq has removed a dictator but created considerable chaos the question has only become more urgent: Are there good wars?
