The \u201eAri Rath Prize for Critical Journalism\u201c was established on the basis of a private initiative to honour journalists, in the spirit of the renowned former editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post who passed away in January 2017, who have earned distinction in their work for reporting on flight, displacement, and asylum in a critical manner committed to upholding human rights.
\nA jury of experts chaired by Gertraud Auer Borea d'Olmo, Secretary General of the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue and close confidant of Ari Rath, has unanimously nominated Irene Brickner for this year's \u201eAri Rath Prize for Critical Journalism\u201c.<\/p>\n

The \u201eAri Rath Honorary Award\u201c was unanimously awarded to Dr Anneliese Rohrer.<\/p>\n

Irene Brickner<\/strong> studied political science and sociology at the University of Vienna. She has worked for the daily newspaper Neue AZ, the N\u00d6N and the ORF, among others. She has worked as a freelancer for profil and Falter.
\nIrene Brickner has been an editor and commentator in the Chronicle\/Panorama section since 2005, and has also been chief editor at Der Standard since 2018. She often comments on human rights issues and mainly covers asylum and immigration law issues, gender equality policy and environmental topics in her reports.
\nIn her articles, Brickner shines the spotlight on the dark side, on those people in Austria who are disadvantaged in our society. In her work, she is committed to integration and to amending the Aliens Act.
\nIrene Brickner has received numerous awards, including the Dr Karl Renner Journalism Prize in the online category for \u201eBrickner's Blog\u201c on derStandard.at. In 2007, together with Johanna Ruzicka, she published the book \u201eHei\u00dfe Zeiten: 50 Antworten auf brennende Fragen zum Klimawandel\u201c. In 2012, her \"Schwarzbuch Menschenrechte\" was published by Residenz Verlag.<\/p>\n

Anneliese Rohrer<\/strong> has been commenting on Austrian domestic politics for 45 years. After studying history in Vienna, she spent three years as a university assistant in Auckland. Back in Austria, she started working for the Austrian daily newspaper Die Presse in 1974. In 1987, she became head of the domestic policy department. In 2001, during the Sch\u00fcssel I government, she was transferred to the foreign policy department by the then editor-in-chief of Die Presse, Andreas Unterberger, which she headed until her compulsory retirement after reaching the statutory retirement age in 2005. In 2005, the book \u201eCharakter Fehler. Die \u00d6sterreicher und ihre Politiker\u201c was published in 2005, followed by the book \u201eEnde des Gehorsams\u201c in 2011.
\nFrom 2005 to 2009, she wrote weekly for the Kurier. Rohrer has been a columnist for the daily newspaper Die Presse since 2009. She collaborated with her daughter on the documentary films \u201eFatal Promises\u201c (human trafficking, 2013) and \u201eBack to the Fatherland\u201c (young Israelis in Vienna and Berlin, 2018). She also taught journalism at the Vienna University of Applied Sciences from 2005 to 2012. Rohrer also became known to a wider public through her regular
\nParticipation in discussion programmes on Austrian television and the radio station \u00d61.<\/p>\n
