Later Smale became executive editor of the International Herald Tribune in Paris and bureau chief of the New York Times in Berlin. She also experienced 9\/11 in New York and viewed the Trump presidency through the lens of the UN in New York.  Alison Smale is one of the most experienced reporters and editors who worked during this extraordinary period of democratic awakening, which turned into an era of rising nationalist populism and authoritarianism. In her Philoxenia talk Alison Smale will explore how working as a female reporter has changed over the decades and under changing political circumstances. And how the danger to the freedom of press came back to editorial offices in Moscow, Budapest and New York.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Alison Smale<\/strong><\/em> is a British journalist. From 2017 until 2019, she served as the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, United Nations Department of Public Information. She has almost 40-years of journalism experience gained in an international career that has included holding some of the most prestigious posts in the profession such as Executive Editor of the International Herald Tribune and Bureau chief of The New York Times in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tessa Szyszkowitz<\/strong><\/em>, Author and Journalist for PROFIL, Falter and Cicero; since 1989 she covered international politics based in Vienna, Jerusalem (1994-1998), Brussels (1998-2002), Moscow (2002-2010) and London.
