As Head of the Infection Department at the Favoriten Clinic, Christoph Wenisch has been on the \u201efront line\u201c of the fight against coronavirus for a year now. Not a \u201egod in white\u201c, but someone who explains what is known, what progress has been made in treatment and what is not known at eye level with the population. Someone who radiates optimism, while there is occasionally displeasure all around. When he was one of the first Austrians to be vaccinated at the end of 2020, the photo went around the world and became a canonical image. Relief, joy, also this \u201ewe won't let it get us down\u201c.<\/p>\n

He talks to Robert Misik about the truths behind the headlines, about the excessive demands on healthcare staff, the presence of death, the advances in treatment methods. But also the connections between medicine and society, the devastation of everyday life, the suffering of children who have had no school for months, etc. And about his self-image as a doctor and the importance of a solidarity-based healthcare system. And about the question of how a pandemic actually ends...?<\/p>\n

Dr Christoph Wenisch<\/strong> (* 1967 in St. P\u00f6lten, Austria, trained at the Medical Faculty of Vienna) is Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at the Klinik Favoriten (formerly Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hospital) in Vienna. He is also Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Vienna. He specialises in internal medicine, intensive care medicine, infectious diseases and tropical medicine.
\nChristoph Wenisch is a member of the board of the Austrian Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, Vice President of the Austrian Society for Infectious Diseases and former President of the Austrian Society for Infectious Diseases.<\/p>\n
