The public, academics, journalists, activists and Jews themselves are divided over its meaning like never before. This is the result of a 30-year process of redefinition that increasingly equates anti-Semitism with criticism of Israel's policies. The consequences of this redefinition are alarming: the progressive demonisation of universalist positions and a populist legitimisation of Islamophobia and nationalism. The result is also a threat to Jews all over the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Antony Lerman<\/strong> is a British writer specialising in the study of anti-Semitism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, multiculturalism and the place of religion in society. He is a Senior Fellow at the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue and Honorary Fellow of the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish\/non-Jewish Relations at the University of Southampton.
