According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the proportion of women and children among those who fled to Europe in January 2016 was 55 per cent; just over half (50.3 per cent) of Syrian refugees are women. On 9 May Viola Raheb organised the workshop and panel discussion \"The female face of refugees\", which focused on visualising the current situation of female refugees in the crisis region, on the refugee route and at European and Austrian level. Roula El Masri, Programme Director for Gender Equality at the Resource Center for Gender Equality ABAAD in Lebanon, and Beatrix B\u00fccher-Aniyamuzaala, co-author of the current care study on the situation of Syrian women, spoke about changing gender roles among refugees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
