EUROPE AFTER BREXIT

HOW THE EU WILL REBALANCE ITS POWERS BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH, EAST AND WEST

Caroline de Gruyter is an author and journalist based in Oslo. She is an European Affairs correspondent for the leading Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad and a regular contributor to the think tank Carnegie Europe. She was posted to Brussels twice and spent more than fifteen years covering Europe – some of them from Vienna.

Tessa Szyszkowitz, journalist and author of Echte Engländer, Picus Verlag, September 2018

After the departure of the United Kingdom the balance of power in Europe will shift. In fact, this shift is already happening. Big countries like France and Germany are becoming more dominant. Smaller countries, especially those who often relied on the UK for support, will form new coalitions. A Hanseatic group and a new ‘Mitteleuropa’ are, for instance, emerging. And we see a consistent move of non-euro countries towards the eurozone. After years of crisis and pessimism, and during a worrying rise of the far right all over Europe, this is a very welcome development. There is new political adrenaline flowing in the EU after Brexit.
