Find of the Month for September from the Kreisky Archive

Bruno Kreisky steps out of a small aeroplane. It is that moment between landing and his next engagement. The image symbolises the intensity of his travel schedule and the many, often long, journeys on which foreign policy was conducted back then: brief stops, bilateral negotiations, spontaneous discussions. Our oral history project „Kreisky’s Foreign Policy – As Seen by His Closest Colleagues“ sheds light on key foreign policy issues and Kreisky’s approach to shaping foreign policy. At the same time, it brings other key figures into focus. We have spoken to contemporary witnesses from his inner circle, as well as activists and journalists, in order to capture a range of perspectives.
The interviews from our oral history project are now available online. On the Kreisky Archive’s digital platform, you will find the interviews as audio files and transcripts, supplemented by biographies of the interviewees and additional information to help you understand the context.

The interviews offer a rare insight into Kreisky’s foreign policy from the 1960s to the 1980s – beyond the official records – and reveal which locations and forums were important, through which channels communication took place, and what sources of information and networks existed. From autumn onwards, individual topics and previously little-known accounts from the interviews will be featured in the „Take-Off“ podcast series. These will also be published on the Kreisky Archive’s website over the coming months. We will keep you updated.
