BUILDING A PROGRESSIVE ALTERNATIVE

The path does not automatically lead to the right
Kevin Kühnert is seen by some as an inner-party rebel, by others as the future of German social democracy. In the controversy surrounding the grand coalition, the Juso leader was not only the leader of the "no" faction, his fire and talent made him a media star overnight. In the Bruno Kreisky Forum, he outlines his vision of social democracy in the 21st century.

Kevin Kühnert (born 1 July 1989 in West Berlin) is a German SPD politician and has been the federal chairman of the Jusos since 24 November 2017. Kühnert joined the SPD in 2005 and was state chairman of the Jusos Berlin from 2012 to 2015. From 2015, he served as deputy federal chairman of the Jusos and was responsible for tax policy, pension policy, structural policy, right-wing extremism and migration policy as well as social media work. In November 2017, the federal congress in Saarbrücken elected him chairman of the Jusos with 225 out of 297 votes. Kühnert is active in local politics in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district as a member of the district council.
Following his election as Juso national chairman, Kühnert spoke out against the formation of another grand coalition („#NoGroKo“). He is campaigning for polarisation between the major mainstream parties so that right-wing populists cannot present themselves as a supposed alternative.
