is a veteran diplomatic and national security correspondent; he was recently appointed The New York Times’ Beijing Bureau Chief. He joined The New York Times in 1989, and has previously worked as a correspondent in Moscow, Baghdad and Washington, where he covered the State Department, the Pentagon and the White House.
