WOLFGANG STREECK
BETWEEN GLOBALISM AND DEMOCRACY
Political economy in outgoing neoliberalism
Growing prosperity for all was the promise of neoliberalism; the result is a growing inability to tame the capitalist inequality machine. A tug-of-war over the political order has long since begun in many countries. It is time for a fundamental decision, says Wolfgang Streeck in his new book. Will the restructuring of the state system continue as before, in the direction of even greater supranational centralisation? Or would the better solution be to move towards a modern “small state system” based on peaceful co-operation? With the aim of re-founding democratic politics, his vote is clear: in favour of the second path, especially in Europe.
