China will mark a number of politically significant anniversaries in 2019, culminating in the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China in October. China is throwing its weight and its interests into international affairs with vigour. There are many lines of conflict, whether geopolitical, regional or in the areas of trade and technology. The discussion will attempt to shed some light on these issues: from the perspective of historical research, from the perspective of journalistic analyses of current political events, and finally from the perspective of an artist working in China and internationally.
CHINA IN VIEW - A programme series of the Bruno Kreisky Forum, curated by Irene Giner-Reichl in cooperation with the Institute for Peacekeeping and Conflict Management
How we in the EU perceive China has an impact on our political positioning. How the EU is perceived in China has an impact on China's political positioning. It is nothing unusual if the view from the outside and the respective self-image are not congruent. When it comes to China and the EU, however, it seems to the curator that the discrepancy between self-image and external view is particularly great. In a loose series of events, „China at a Glance“ attempts to bring these mutual perceptions into dialogue with each other and to build a new understanding of international relations in the 21st century, which China is playing a key role in shaping and profoundly changing.
