CHRISTIAN DEMOCRACY
A forgotten history and its lessons for our time

Moderation
Isolde Charim, author and philosopher

Today, there is a lot of controversial talk about Islam and democracy. It is often forgotten that there were major conflicts between Catholicism and modern democracy, especially during the nineteenth century and late into the twentieth century - with many religious representatives as well as liberal and democratic critics considering Catholicism and democracy to be fundamentally incompatible. The lecture examines the various intellectual and political strategies of Catholic thinkers to bring Catholicism and democracy closer together and ultimately to reconcile them. And it asks what more general lessons can perhaps be learnt from these attempts.
