There is hardly a crisis in the Middle East at the moment that does not involve the hegemonic competition between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The wars in Syria and Yemen have a proxy level; in Iraq and Lebanon, the precarious political balance within the country is in constant danger. Added to this are the signs of disintegration within the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Moderation Gudrun Harrer, Senior Editor, Der Standard; she teaches Modern History and Politics of the Near and Middle East at the University of Vienna and at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.
