CONFLICT LANDSCAPES OF SOUTH SUDAN
Taking stock of 10 years of independence

Ten years after gaining independence, the young Republic of South Sudan, after an initially promising start, has been embroiled in a complex and difficult to understand civil war since 2013, which is not very accessible to the public. In his newly published book „Conflict Landscapes of South Sudan“, Austrian South Sudan expert Jan Pospisil analyses the fragments of the young state in detail and spans an arc that takes into account the colonial past and its effects as well as the transition process and ethno-politics. The meticulously written book is the starting point for a dialogue that attempts to take stock of a decade of independence and place it in a multi-polar context. The role of neighbouring countries and regional organisations (in particular IGAD and the AU), as well as the international community and the EU, will also be discussed.

Jan Pospisil, Austrian researcher and research director at the Austrian Study Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, lecturer in political science at the University of Vienna and researcher in the Political Settlements Research Programme (PSRP) at the University of Edinburgh.
