A plea for a democratic culture of emotions
Populists and extremists dominate political emotions. They not only stir up anger, but are also seen as beacons of hope by their supporters. Democratic forces, on the other hand, often appear anaemic and technocratic. Yet history teaches us that emotions should not be left to the radicals. In his latest book, Johannes Hillje calls for a rethink and shows how emotions are part of politics and can be put at the service of democracy. Using his own studies and concrete examples, Hillje proves that hope, anger and fear are part of a new democratic culture of emotions.
As a researcher, Hillje has been dealing with socio-psychological dynamics and political emotions for years and has repeatedly conducted large-scale empirical research. For example, he worked on the large field study „The return to the politically abandoned“, which he also presented at the Bruno Kreisky Forum at the time.
Ingrid Bordnig, author and journalist, deals with the effects of digitalisation on our society in her work. One of her focal points is dealing with disinformation and hate comments. Brodnig has written six books, most recently “Wider die Verrohung” (Against Brutalisation), which provides tips on how to engage in an objective democratic debate.

Johannes Hillje studied Political Communication at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Journalism at the University of Mainz. He then gained experience in journalism and at the United Nations in New York. Today, the former campaign manager works as a freelance political and communications consultant for companies, ministries, politicians and parties and is a frequent commentator in the media. Hillje lives with his family in Berlin.
