ELECTIONS IN IRAN
Parliamentary and expert council elections will be held in the Islamic Republic of Iran on 1 March. The Guardian Council has already eliminated all critical candidates in advance - almost 50 across the country - to the extent that in some constituencies there is only one candidate left in the end. This means that he can be elected with just one vote. There are critical voices who believe that one can no longer speak of an election, but of a selection process to suit the taste of the government and the religious leader Ali Khamenei. What these elections will show, however, is the mood of the people towards the regime. The Iranian spiritual and political leadership likes to present voter turnout as approval of the system - and there are signs that it will reach an all-time low
