The German singer-songwriter, poet, actor and composer Konstantin Wecker is one of the most versatile artists in the German-speaking world. As an author, film music composer, musical and children's musical producer as well as the critical voice of a former drug addict in the fight against addiction, Konstantin Wecker's versatility has been impressive for over 35 years.
Konstantin Wecker's work and life have been the subject of several academic papers and theses at various universities around the world.
Konstantin Wecker has also been politically active throughout his artistic career. He took part in the Artists for Peace concert series in 1982. In many of his songs, Wecker deals with current political events. His ballad „Willy“ deals with the confrontation of the 1968 movement with right-wing ideas. Over the decades, Wecker has adapted it again and again, with the most recent version dating from 2021.
In 2010, in an interview with the magazine Graswurzelrevolution, Konstantin Wecker declared his support for a society free of domination: „I have always felt that I belonged to the anarchist camp, even in the “68 era, because I was very impressed by Henry Miller as a young man.„ He continues: “We have to hold on to our utopias of a society free of domination and violence and develop them further together with others."
Wecker has received numerous prizes and awards for his artistic and civil rights work.
As part of his new UTOPIA concert tour Konstantin Wecker visits Vienna. Robert Misik talks to him in Kreisky's living room about what drives him.
