Things used to be much simpler. Europe was simply a Phoenician princess. And today? Europe is all that: a continent. Its inhabitants (old and new). The languages and the stories that are told in them. But Europe is also an idea - one of the great, salutary, powerful ideas of mankind. Literature has always been a companion and friend of ideas - by virtue of its rhetorical magic, by virtue of its testing effect, by virtue of its ability to demonstrate what should or should not be. For several decades, Europe seemed to take its inhabitants for granted. That is over. Is it over? Now it must become a matter of course to fantasise about Europe again.
