ROBERT MISIK IN CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL HÄUPL
„EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO A GOOD LIFE.“
He was actually „always there“ for the younger generations - Michael Häupl, Mayor of Vienna from 1994 to 2018. He led the city's fortunes for an incredible 24 years and had been party leader of the Vienna SPÖ since 1993. He led sole governments, grand coalitions with the ÖVP and turned red-green into a progressive model.
As an ecologist, he was no stranger to climate and environmental policy, having already made his mark as an environmental councillor.
But if anything characterised Häupl during his time in office, it was his adherence to principle.
When it came to human rights, refugees, human dignity or mere decency, he never wavered or opportunistically squinted at poll ratings - and it practically always worked in his favour. Even at the height of the refugee crisis, he therefore achieved a furious election victory against all expectations.
Today, Michael Häupl is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Austria Wien football club and has been President of Volkshilfe Wien since 2020. As such, he says: „We have a central goal, which is also my personal goal: to counteract injustice and poverty, especially child poverty. We are there for those in our society who need help and support. Everyone has the right to a good life“.
