On the 100th birthday of Teddy Kollek

Teddy Kollek was born in Hungary on 27 May 1911 and the family soon moved to Vienna. His father, Alfred Kollek, a staunch Zionist, named his son after Theodor Herzl. In 1935, Teddy Kollek emigrated to Palestine and was a co-founder of Kibbutz Ein Gev on the Sea of Galilee. He soon became politically active in Palestine and was a close associate of David Ben Gurion for many years, even before Israel was founded. Kollek became mayor of Jerusalem in 1965. During his 28 years in office, he became a symbolic figure for the peaceful coexistence of Jews, Christians and Muslims. Kollek has received many honours and awards for his commitment, including the title of Honorary Citizen of Vienna.
