Robert Misik in conversation with Michael Häupl
FRIENDSHIP
What has to happen for a Lower Austrian teacher's son from a Christian-social background to become mayor of Red Vienna?
In this book, Michael Häupl tells us about his difficult years in a convent school, his life choices between science and politics, his rise and painful defeats. He takes us behind the scenes of Austrian domestic politics and describes the reasons why the red chancellors Gusenbauer, Faymann and Kern failed.
For the first time, Häupl also discusses the turbulent disputes in the Vienna SPÖ before he handed over office to Michael Ludwig. And he writes about the serious illness that followed his retirement from politics. Michael Häupl's clear political convictions and private insights make it clear why the popularity of the long-serving mayor remains unbroken to this day.
Moderation Robert Misik, Author and journalist
Michael Häupl, born in 1949, studied biology and began a scientific career at the Natural History Museum before focussing entirely on politics. In 1994, he succeeded Helmut Zilk as Mayor and Governor of Vienna and steered the city's fortunes like no other, even in turbulent times.
After 23 years, six months and 16 days in this office, he retired from politics in 2018 and is now active in numerous functions, including as President of Volkshilfe Wien and the Vienna Science, Research and Technology Fund.
