Violence must never be forgotten: Mirjam Zadoff, Director of the Munich NS Documentation Centre, brings together ideas for a global culture of remembrance.

In today's societies, people live together whose biographies are characterised by different experiences of war or discrimination - sometimes spanning generations. Can they agree on a common narrative?
Mirjam Zadoff understands history as the ability to answer questions of the present from the past. She brings together examples from all over the world of how the memory of the history of violence is kept alive - or forgotten - in many different ways: in Italy the deportation of the Jews, in Japan the forced prostitutes, in Johannesburg the victims of the Holocaust and colonialism. In this way, a global culture of remembrance is created that includes all people in whose lives history has left a trace of violence.

Mirjam Zadoff, born in 1974, studied history and Jewish studies in Vienna and Munich. From 2014 to 2019 she was Professor of Jewish Studies and History at Indiana University Bloomington, and since 2018 she has headed the Munich NS Documentation Centre. In 2014, Hanser published Der rote Hiob. The Life of Werner Scholem, which was awarded the Fraenkel Prize for Contemporary History. She was a member of the jury for the Geschwister Scholl Prize and the German Non-Fiction Prize 2023.
