CLASS

CLASS
The emergence of above and below
The battle for prestige, status and reputation
Economic class divisions are once again the centre of attention, as are subtle class inequalities, small but striking devaluations - and blatant distinctions. The term „classism“, largely unknown just a few years ago, has become a common term for inequalities of opportunity. Inequalities that may have been accepted in the past are not simply taken for granted today.
Classes permeate our entire lives: our values, our feelings, our friendships and relationships, our tastes and lifestyle, our profession and our finances. It is a topic that probably concerns everyone.
Hanno Sauer examines where our ideas of class and status come from, how they shape our society and how many classes there actually are. In a gripping and captivating way, he describes how the latest scientific findings are revolutionising our understanding of society.
Hanno Sauer, born in 1983, who is „emerging as the new star of public philosophy“ (SRF „Sternstunde Philosophie“), is Associate Professor of Philosophy and teaches ethics at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. He is the author of numerous specialist articles and several academic monographs. His most recent book was „Morality: The Invention of Good and Evil“. Hanno Sauer lives with his family in Düsseldorf. His book „Klasse“ is on the shortlist for the Science Book of the Year 2026.
