THE HAMAS: BETWEEN RESISTANCE AND TERROR, RULE OVER GAZA AND WAR AGAINST ISRAEL

The attack by Hamas and its allied militias on the Israeli border area with the Gaza Strip on 7 October 2023 marked a deep turning point in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In his new book, Joseph Croitoru explains the background and course of the terrorist attack and analyses the Israeli campaign of annihilation against the Hamas semi-state. He traces the history of Hamas in Gaza, where it emerged from the local branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1987, and sheds light on facets of its rule in the Gaza Strip, which it has controlled alone since 2007. Israel's harsh treatment of the Islamist organisation and the sometimes bloody conflict between it and its Palestinian rival Fatah are also the subject of the book, which Gudrun Harrer will discuss with the author.

Joseph Croitoru, born in Haifa in 1960, is a German journalist and historian with a doctorate. He studied in Jerusalem and Freiburg im Breisgau and has been writing for German-language newspapers and radio since 1992, specialising in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In 2021, he received the Peace Prize of the Geschwister Korn and Gerstenmann Foundation.
