Taiwan hotbed

The tensions surrounding Taiwan are an ongoing geopolitical fault line. China's President Xi Jinping is demanding that the island comes under the control of the People's Republic. Supported by the USA, the government in Taipei is insisting on Taiwan's autonomy. Relations between China, Taiwan and the USA have become much closer in recent years, while economic and security policy interests have become increasingly intertwined. Taiwan plays a central role in global supply chains and is therefore of enormous importance to the global economy. A military escalation would have far-reaching consequences, including for Europe. The background to current developments, the strategic interests of the players involved and possible scenarios for the coming years and their impact on the international order are therefore of central interest in order to gain orientation in an increasingly complex geopolitical situation.
