Erwin Lanc was a member of the Vienna Provincial Parliament and a member of the Vienna City Council from 1960 to 1966 and a member of the National Council from 1966 to 1983. He was Federal Minister for Transport from 1973 to 1977, Federal Minister for the Interior from 1977 to 1983 and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1983 to 1984
Erwin Lanc was also Vice President of the Association for Sport and Physical Culture in Austria (ASKÖ) and long-time President of the Austrian Handball and Fistball Federation (1977-1993) as well as President of the International Handball Federation (1984-2000).
Since retiring from day-to-day politics, Erwin Lanc has been particularly committed to international peace and dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians, including as President of the International Institute for Peace from 1989 to 2008. Since the end of 2008, Erwin Lanc has been Honorary President of the International Institute for Peace.
