It took until 1990 to track down and reunite the few survivors of the author's Jewish family. The Iron Curtain had fallen the year before. With the closure of the Arbeiter-Zeitung in 1989 as a
central organ of the Austrian Socialist Party, the end of a social democratic century in Austria also seemed to have arrived.
The continuation of the story begun in Well-Ordered Solitude - it ends in 1964 - up to the political end of the 20th century is reflected in Local Indifference, a view of Austria that is not necessarily commonplace due to employment in national laboratories (USA) and foreign universities, reinforced by the author's journalistic activities in left-wing magazines and newspapers:
