MEDICINE AND ITS ENEMIES
How charlatans and conspiracy theorists have been fighting science for centuries

Empress Maria Theresa and Johann Wolfgang Goethe were in favour of smallpox vaccination, Immanuel Kant, Andreas Hofer and Karl Lueger agitated against it. Witch hunters, natural healers, Nazi physicians: the journalist and author Herbert Lackner and the well-known oncologist Christoph Zielinski look for the roots of today's anti-science movement in history and describe its profound errors.
The result is the first comprehensive account of a phenomenon that raises many questions: Why are hippies with Rasta curls suddenly marching side by side with right-wing radicals in anti-vaccination demonstrations all over Europe? What connects worried mums and outlandish conspiracy theorists? Why do they trust weird faith healers more than science? And what can we make of their arguments from a medical point of view?
Die Medizin und ihre Feinde (ueberreuter, April 2022, ISBN 978-3-8000-7796-0) provides the answers to these questions.

Herbert Lackner, born in Vienna, studied political science and journalism, was deputy editor-in-chief of the „Arbeiter Zeitung” and then editor-in-chief of the news magazine profil for 23 years.
