ROBERT MISIK IN CONVERSATION WITH SOLMAZ KHORSAND
PATHOS

Pathos is everywhere. We are constantly moved, outraged and touched by the world - and we want to share this with everyone. Pathos means power. When our own emotion moves others, things get rolling. Pathos can then mean change. At the same time, its use also reflects the prevailing power relations.
Solmaz Khorsand sharply and pointedly dissects the individual pitches of the concert of pathos that constantly surrounds us. She measures the volume of the spokespeople and listens carefully to the quiet utterances of the marginalised. She senses whose excited howls carry weight and who is advised not to be so pathetic. She shows the finely balanced tipping point at which it is decided whether pathos leads to mindfulness or radicalisation. And, last but not least, she advocates pausing for a moment, toning down our own noise and taking a realistic look at ourselves, which encourages us to simply shut up at the right moment.

Solmaz Khorsand, born in 1985, is a journalist and currently works for the Swiss magazine Republik. She has worked for the Wiener Zeitung, Die Zeit, derStandard.at and Datum.
Master's degree in International Relations and Economics from Johns Hopkins University (USA). Khorsand's work ranges from essays on Austrian domestic politics to reports from Belarus and election coverage from Iran. Her essay „The Iranian Transformation“ was one of the best stories of 2017 and she was honoured with the Vienna Journalist Award 2018 for her work.
