POLITICS & WOMEN
Adelheid Popp was the first woman to speak in the Austrian parliament on 4 March 1919. She came from a poor, patriarchal, violent and uneducated immigrant family. How did she manage to become a pioneer of the Austrian women's movement? Do women who become politicians still have higher hurdles to overcome than men today? In the beginning, female politicians were often reduced to women's politics. Is that different today? Does gender influence their politics? On the occasion of the new edition of the key work of the social democratic women's movement ADELHEID POPP. JUGEND EINER ARBEITERIN in a politically annotated edition, editor Sibylle Hamann presents the social democrat once again one hundred years after her entry into the Austrian parliament.
Sibylle Hamann, publisher of „Jugend einer Arbeiterin“, has recently also become a Green politician. Until July 2019, the freelance journalist and publicist worked for publications including Falter and Die Presse.
Sara Tavares da Costa, SJ Vienna 3, candidate for the 2019 National Council elections, Vice President of the Young European Socialists.
