RELIGION, VIOLENCE AND CIVILITY: PARIS BEFORE AND AFTER

Aziz Al-Azmeh was born in Damascus, Syria. He received the PhD in Oriental Studies from University of Oxford. He is currently University Professor at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. His other works include Keywords, Islam in Europe, Ibn Khladun, and The Times of History. He has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies.
The murderous attacks by Islamic extremists against the satirical magazine “Charlie Hebdo” and a Jewish supermarket in Paris brought, in the perception of many, the war into the heart of Europe. The meeting will discuss the antecedents of the events, its implications and possible consequences, for Europe as well as for the Arab world.
