Multiple crises and fears about the future dominate our everyday lives. The tranquillisers of the Merkel years are no longer working. The left once set out to fight for a better life for all. Today, it has to fear for its political survival. It is paralysed by angry populism and discord.

The former cultural mayor of Berlin and one of his party's most popular politicians, Klaus Lederer, radically rethinks being on the left. He questions history, describes his own experiences of upheaval and provides answers to the pressing questions of our time: How can we make our world fairer, more liveable and more sustainable? How can we look forward to a better future in freedom and community?

Klaus Lederer was born in Mecklenburg in 1974 and grew up in Frankfurt (Oder). In 2005, he was elected state chairman of the Left Party in Berlin. From 2016 to April 2023, he was Mayor and Senator for Culture and Europe in Berlin. Since then, he has been a member of the DIE LINKE parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives and spokesperson for queer policy, as well as a member of the Committee for Health and Care.
