SECURITY AND OPPORTUNITIES
The value and transformation of labour

Hubertus Heil, German Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs

Moderation Robert Misik, Author and journalist

The pandemic and the economic crisis have brought even more uncertainty into the lives of many people. At the same time, the pandemic is making precariousness even more visible: for example in the meat industry, the conditions in workers„ housing estates, the situation of parcel deliverers and carers. But the insecurities and fears of decline have long since spread further afield: Structural change also threatens seemingly secure jobs, but at the same time creates new ones. The “need for security„ is once again becoming central. Work is also more than just a job that guarantees a secure income: it gives us an identity, weaves people into social networks, is a source of status and self-respect - and not least a source of prosperity and progress. Hubertus Heil, the Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, outlines the “value and transformation of work" and the tasks of contemporary social policy.

Hubertus Heil, 49, has been the German Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs since 2018. The SPD politician has been a member of the Bundestag since 1998 and has also served as Secretary General of the German Social Democrats. Heil has also held the office of Deputy Party Chairman of the SPD since 2019.
