They are popular doping for speeches, PowerPoint presentations and social media posts: witty, astute or merely precocious quotes from all kinds of intellectual greats. Einstein, Lao Tzu and Tucholsky are the most popular contributors. But many are simply fake. Or have been foisted on celebrities. This is proven by quote researcher Gerald Krieghofer. The Viennese has already uncovered over 700. Krieghofer has now compiled the best false sayings from politics, culture, sport, science and religion in a book for the first time, shedding light on their origins and backgrounds and providing tips on how to identify fake quotes.

Gerald Krieghofer is a philosopher, literary scholar and Karl Kraus expert. Since 2014, the Viennese has been running a blog in which he identifies misquotes and »cuckoo quotes«. His Twitter account @krieghofer is a point of contact for those seeking advice and sceptics. Krieghofer is in demand as an expert and fact-checker throughout the German-speaking world, including in the »Süddeutsche Zeitung«, »Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung«, »Deutschlandradio«, »Focus« and »ZEIT«.
