Afghanistan has been ruled by the militant Islamist Taliban again for over a year. We remember: on 15 August 2021, the extremists invaded the capital while the last president of the Afghan republic, Ashraf Ghani, fled abroad and the USA and its allies were busy withdrawing their troops. But how did that fateful day come about and what did the Americans„ “longest war" in the Hindu Kush actually achieve?
Emran Feroz is a freelance journalist, war reporter and author. He has been reporting from and about Afghanistan for almost ten years and writes for the US magazine Forein Policy, CNN, the New York Times, Profil and Der Spiegel. In 2021, Feroz's bestseller ‘The Longest War„ was published, in which he critically and in great detail analyses 20 years of War on Terror analysed in Afghanistan. In the same year, Feroz was honoured for his work with the Austrian Concordia Prize in the human rights category.
