THE EU IN A FRAGMENTING WORLD ORDER

Recent geopolitical developments have created profound security challenges for the European Union and its member states. Navigating those developments requires an understanding of the emerging fragmenting world order. These developments raise urgent questions about the relationships and cooperation between the national and European levels. Can Europe become geopolitically robust? Will it be fragmented by internal and external forces, or will it rediscover its sense of community and geopolitical strength? Safeguarding the core principles of security, prosperity and values will require far-reaching and robust policy decisions. Senior research fellows of the Dutch Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) and Austrian experts share their perspectives on the fragmenting world order and on the EU's role and perspectives in this new environment.

Haroon Sheikh, senior research fellow at the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) and a philosopher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Ruth Mampuys, senior research fellow at the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), an independent advisory body that delivers long-term, science-based strategic advice to the Dutch government across all policy domains

Helfried Carl, diplomat, since 2019 partner of the Innovation in Politics Institute in Vienna and founder of the European Capital of Democracy initiative

Doris Wydra, Political scientist and coordinator Salzburg Centre for European Studies (tbc)
