Bernd Ulrich
studied philosophy and political science in Marburg. He gained active political experience himself in the peace movement of the early 1980s and from 1988 to 1990 as office manager in the Green parliamentary group in the Bundestag. Since 1994, he has been observing German politics as a journalist, first in Bonn and then in Berlin.
He has been following Angela Merkel's political path for 20 years now, has written a biography of Joschka Fischer and published Sigmar Gabriel's moving childhood experiences for the first time in January 2013 in ZEIT.
More recently, he was awarded the Nannen Prize for his essay on the topicality of the German past for younger people and the Theodor Wolff Prize for his article "The world is out of joint". His articles on Vladimir Putin have appeared in various Russian newspapers.
Bernd Ulrich has been deputy editor-in-chief of DIE ZEIT for twelve years and head of the political section for eight years.
