THE FUTURE OF INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INSTITUTIONS IN TIMES OF GLOBAL UPHEAVAL

The global human rights order is in a state of flux. Wars, mass exodus, disinformation and democratic backsliding have shaken confidence in the international order. Institutions created to protect human rights and human dignity are under unprecedented political and structural pressure. A fragmented world with a shifting balance of power poses major challenges for international human rights organisations and their ability to act. The weakening of humanitarian and international law can have a significant impact on global responsibility and justice.

With decades of diplomatic and political experience Volker Türk with Ulrike Lunacek talk about the challenges and opportunities of rebuilding trust in the international human rights system, from the local to the global level.

Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Austrian lawyer and long-standing UN official has dedicated his professional life to the protection of human rights, refugees and the rule of law worldwide.

Moderation

Ulrike Lunacek, Special envoy for Austria's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, Deputy Chairwoman of Women*solidarity, former Vice-President of the European Parliament.

The conversation is at free admission accessible.

Before the discussion will be an exclusive preview of the film A simple accident (start: 17:30) will be shown.

The film follows the questions of guilt, retribution and the (im)possibility of moral clarity. What remains when the system fails - and what happens when victims act themselves?
