IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE DOM MUSEUM VIENNA

What does work mean for a society? It secures income, provides identity, organises solidarity.

Artificial intelligence is not the only, but a crucial driver of a change that questions all of this. The role of work is being renegotiated globally and individually. The debates about it swing between hysteria and promises of salvation. The scenarios range from redistribution and shorter working hours to increased inequality and precarious employment.

But who sets the course for which future? What education do we have today, and what will we need in the future? And what is necessary for this change to benefit people rather than devalue them?

Julia Bock-Schappelwein is an economist (Senior Economist) at WIFO and has been working in the research group "Labour Market Economics, Income and Social Security" since 2004; in 2024, she received the Grete Rehor Prize for Economics as part of the Austrian Women's Prize.

Barbara Prainsack, Professor at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Vienna and at the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine at King's College London; in Vienna, she heads the research group “Contemporary Studies of Solidarity“ (CeSCoS) and the new research platform „Governance of Digital Practices“; board member of the Bruno Kreisky Forum
