The next UN Climate Change Conference will be hosted by the United Arab Emirates in December 2023. It is high time to take a closer look at this small but ambitious desert state, which owes its wealth and political influence to the sale of oil and gas. Recently, however, a radical change has been taking place in the oil-rich Gulf monarchies on the Arabian Peninsula, and the Emirates are leading the way. What are the emirate's motives and what is behind the „green hype“? How can a climate-neutral energy transition take place in a country trimmed for oil? The lecture will address these and other questions.

Tobias Zumbrägel is a historian, political scientist and Islamic scholar specialising in the Middle East. He has been working as a postdoc at the Institute of Geography at Heidelberg University since January 2023. This was preceded by research activities at the Competence Centre „Climate, Climatic Change, and Society“ (CLICCS) at the University of Hamburg and at the Center for Applied Research in Partnership with the Orient (CARPO) in Bonn. His book was published in 2022 Political Power and Environmental Sustainability in Gulf Monarchies (Palgrave).
