Bruno Kreisky Forum
Panel discussion

The Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue and the University of Vienna invite you to the symposium
CONFLICTING POPULISMS. LEFT AND RIGHT WING POPULISM IN EUROPE

The event begins on Thursday, 9 June 2016, 19:00 at the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue, Armbrustergasse 15, 1190 Vienna with a panel discussion:

THE NEW PROMISE?
LEFT-WING AND RIGHT-WING POPULISM IN EUROPE

Now more than ever, the ambivalence of the phenomenon of populism is becoming clear. Populism is a concept of conflict. If we want to discuss left-wing populism in Europe today, we must also address right-wing populism. The discussion aims to explore this controversial side of populism on the basis of its many current manifestations. Among other things, the following questions will be addressed: What differences can be identified between left-wing and right-wing populisms? Is left-wing populism a possible way out of the crisis - both the economic crisis and the crisis of the left? Can it offer adequate, genuinely left-wing answers to the current political challenges? Can, may, should the left be populist? What is the relationship between populism and democracy? Are they irreconcilable opposites? Or is populism possibly a tendency that is inherent to democracy as such?

On the podium:
Micha Brumlik; Centre for Jewish Studies, Berlin
Chantal Mouffe; University of Westminster in London
Jan-Werner Müller; Princeton University
Peter Pilz: Member of the National Council, The Greens
Moderation
Isolde Charim; philosopher and author

On Friday, 10 June 2016, the event will continue at the University (1010 Vienna, Institute of Political Science, Universitätsstraße 7/2, Lecture Hall 1) from 9.15 a.m. with the following speakers:
