ROBERT MISIK IN CONVERSATION WITH FABIAN REICHER AND ANJA MELZER
THE DESPERATE
Why do young people who grow up in Austria, Germany or France become radicalised? What needs to happen to prevent further jihadist attacks? Fabian Reicher and Anja Melzer provide authentic insights into how the propaganda of the so-called Islamic State works and its appeal to young Europeans. Based on five biographies of radicalised young people, they describe how knowledge of the procedures and the right methods can help them to leave the supposedly attractive youth subculture.
Fabian Reicher, born in 1987, worked as a street worker in Vienna for six years and currently works as a social worker at the Extremism Advice Centre in the field of exit and distancing work. He is co-founder of several online streetwork initiatives. Reicher teaches at various universities in Austria.
Anja Melzer, born in 1989, works as a senior editor at Arbeit&Wirtschaft magazine. She was named one of the „Best 30 under 30“ in 2017 and was honoured with the „Story of the Year“ award at the Austrian Journalism Days in 2018. Her work is in the tradition of so-called Viennese social reportage, „journalism from below“. The motto: go where it hurts, look where nobody is looking, give a voice to those who nobody hears. She tweets under @mauerfallkind.
